Good point -- when I saw 10 squares I immediately assumed the point was to allow vertical movement via bridges, and I didn't stop to think that it didn't actually work that way.
This actually makes me like the idea a bit less. The 10-square designation certainly makes sense from a gameplay perspective, to make bridges valuable without getting out of hand. However, it just doesn't intuitively feel like a bridge to me. I would be more interested in seeing something more like my original interpretation; for balance, you could make the costs scale according to the actual distance the bridge transports you.
Or you could just call it something other than a bridge. =)
