Also, there's no rule generally allowing players to take items from squares, so there should be an explicit statement that players may take bits of gold from their current square.
As to the bordering squares question, the answer is that each square is always bordered on all 4 sides, but it's possible for it to border the same square on more than one side, so there may be fewer than 4 total bordering squares. It's even possible for a square to border itself on all 4 sides, if it's the only square in its row and column.
The only thing that's unclear to me is how gold would be placed on squares bordered multiple time. Would those squares receive multiple pieces of gold (i.e. a piece of gold is placed on the square bordering the unearthed square on each side), or would they still receive only one piece (i.e. a piece of gold is placed on each square bordering the unearthed square)?
