Hmmm. I understand your dissatisfaction over the owner's ability to lock or unlock a building at any time, I may alter that; I do, I'll probably make it so it may be locked or unlocked any time when the owner occupies the same square as the building or an adjacent square. As for the owner's virtual key, I don't see anything inheritly wrong with how that works.
Though, now that I consider it, I may alter it so that the items and features in a locked building are simply inaccessible, and unlocking a building is a function of the key, rather than the owner of the building. This would be a significant difference, making it so that a player other than the owner would be able to unlock, and leave unlocked, a particular building.
I'll consider this for the rest of the day. In the meantime, I'd like to hear some discussion on it.
